textere
Textere was a group exhibition on cultural and linguistic coexistence, held in Bolzano from November 15 to 29, 2024. Curated by sociologist Adel Jabbar and promoted by the ART APS Association, the exhibition involved six artists residing in South Tyrol, exploring the connections between fabric, language, and identity.
From November 15 to 29, 2024, the city of Bolzano hosted Textere, a collaborative exhibition born from the Galleria delle lingue workshop project, curated by sociologist Adel Jabbar.
The project, in its third edition, was promoted by the ART APS Association with the support of the Office for Bilingualism and Foreign Languages – PAB of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, and realized in collaboration with the Library of World Cultures, Teatro Cristallo, and Filmclub Cinema Capitol. The works, displayed across three city venues, addressed themes of upcycling, interculturality, and migration, offering a poetic and creative perspective on the links between people, cultures, and languages.
Textere explored the social dynamics of cultural and linguistic coexistence, involving six artists and designers residing in South Tyrol: Daria Akimenko, Lea Lausch, Jasmin Soraruf, Biljana Stefanoska, Martina Stuflesser and Alejandra Deaza Silva.
The exhibition’s title played on the Latin roots of texere (“to weave” or “to interlace”) and the English word text, highlighting the connection between fabric and language. The works, created during the workshop process, reflected on the relationships between people, cultures, and languages, placing art and fabric at the center as mediums of exchange and storytelling.
The artworks were displayed across three locations in Bolzano: Espace La Stanza, the foyer of Teatro Cristallo, and the atrium of Filmclub Capitol.
Filmclub Capitol presented six “banners” inspired by films addressing intercultural relationships and migration. My work was inspired by the film Vergine giurata by Laura Bispuri, creating a visual collage that depicted the protagonist leaving her homeland and moving to Italy to rediscover herself and her femininity. The piece reflected on how stories of migration often focus on difficulties, while overlooking narratives of renewal and positivity.
Espace La Stanza hosted works by all the artists, each offering a personal approach to the theme of cultural coexistence. My work, Aracne, was a textile sculpture accompanied by an audio of overlapping poetic fragments. The piece invited reflection on the concept of cultural superstructure, exploring personal resilience and transformation through language, and showing how identities evolve through contact with different languages and cultures.
